Baldor Electric has launched a new Dodge-brand mounted ball bearing incorporating sealing and lubrication innovations that can substantially extend equipment lifetimes in harsh, washdown-duty operating environments such as food and beverage processing. Dodge ULTRA KLEEN ball bearings employ a 100% stainless steel bearing insert and feature a patented new sealing system and a ball retainer that retain lubrication and prevent washout in wet operating environments. The new sealing system, QuadGuard, consists of two patented features: a triple lip seal and a rubberised flinger. The triple lip...
Only 32 mm high but with a large measuring range of ±10 kN, the new Type 9129AA three component dynamometer from Kistler Instruments is apt for measuring the machining forces involved in drilling, grinding, milling and turning operations as well as general, multicomponent force measurement in confined spaces. The 95x105 mm cover plate has tapped holes to facilitate mounting work pieces or clamping devices. The materials used in the construction of the dynamometer are resistant to corrosion by cutting fluids and the unit is sealed to IP67 when used with the matching cable. The design of...
Pro-face introduces the 3.4-inch size compact graphic operator interface GP4100 in Europe. Some of the main features are a display with high resolution (200x80 pixels), easy–to-read image and picture fonts with 3 LED backlight colors, a wide range of connectable controllers, fast transfer data via USB mini B I/F, PC-less data transfer via USB memory stick at site, as well as GPPRO-EX for all Pro-face models (HMI, Touch PLC and IPC). Furthermore, the HMI has 16 levels of grayscale, meets international standards such as CE and UL, and is multi language supported.
The Aeropak Great is a thick wall mineral insulated thermocouple from Okazaki Manufacturing Company providing superior resistance to temperature, vibration, impact, corrosion and abrasion and is suitable for harsh process environments such as incinerators, heat treatment furnaces and industrial ovens, as well as for measuring the temperature of molten metal. The gap between the element and the thick wall sheath is densely filled with high purity magnesium oxide (MgO), which prevents any residual air from penetrating the sheath. This enables faster response times compared to conventional...
The long-term study “Roadmap Automation 2020+, Energy” shows that the automation industry is the key to opening up future markets. Without efficient automation technologies, a sustainable energy economy for the coming decades will be beyond our reach.
When you question Dr. Siegfried Behrendt about the “Roadmap Automation 2020+, Energy”, you get more than just information in reply. You undergo an initiation, you dive into the intellectual world of someone who’s passionately involved in the matter. The man doesn’t slow down for you, but what he says is to the point and the listener should...
Starting end of December, 2009, machine safety technology must meet the requirements of ISO 13849-1 and IEC 62061. For the first time, there will now be concrete regulations for the configuration and programming of electric and electronic systems in a standard that applies to machine manufacturing. Reason enough to take a closer look at their content and impact.
Electric and electronic safety products are vital components in a machine's safety chain. With the increasing complexity of machine automation and the higher demands on the safety technology with respect to protection against...
Precise electric motors are the artificial muscles of robots. maxon motor manufactures such drives. A look at the technology and its practical uses.
Bending an arm, extending a hand, splaying a finger; then swing the whole thing back and forth. Even the rough actions of a seemingly simple activity as waving goodbye call for the movements of various joints. In humans, the muscles move part of the body by carrying out contraction and relaxation. A robot must resort to other techniques: in order to move, it uses electric motors. Often these are direct current, or DC, motors.
DC motors enable...
Pressure pulsations in hydraulic systems generate disturbing noise. At the same time, body and fluid borne sound can place the hydraulic system under load. The main causes of it are hydraulic (positive displacement) pumps. As a result, fuel injection pumps in motor vehicles, for example, must be tested for smooth running in the relevant system.
In the course of the necessary steep pressure rise to as high as 2000 bar, the pressure pulsations proliferate and may be reflected at line ends. Such reflections disturb precise measurement of the actual pump pulsation. A hydraulic damping resistor...
Working closely with engineers from Pelamis wave power, Schaeffler’s bearing specialists have enabled a major breakthrough in the design of the next generation of renewable wave energy converters. By pushing the boundaries of bearing and seal technology and by thinking ‘outside the box’, a new renewable energy solution has been made possible by the cooperation of two companies both keen to leave a long term legacy of clean energy.
For more than 10 years, engineers at Pelamis Wave Power have been developing a renewable energy solution that offers both commercial viability and low...
One of the many varied and interesting research projects at the University of Southampton’s ORC (Optoelectronics Research Centre) involves direct UV laser writing of integrated optical circuits on specialised glass substrates and on its own patented ‘flat’ optical cable. With application potential from telecom network components through to lab-on-a-chip (LOC) biological and chemical sensors, the photonic circuits are produced with the help of nanometre level precision positioning systems and motion controls from Aerotech.
The types of optical components that are typically written into...
A new non-contact metrology system that provides portable surface profiling, imaging and thickness measurements down to nanometre resolutions, is utilising high precision optoNCDT 2401 confocal displacement sensors from Micro-Epsilon.
The Hornet3D is a new metrology system developed by Rhombus VS Ltd, a systems integration specialist based in Brackley, Northamptonshire. The company develops custom solutions for vision, non-contact metrology and automation applications, across a wide range of industries, including semiconductor manufacturing, photovoltaics, displays, electronics, medical,...
To ensure smooth operation, airports rely on robust drives in various sizes, which propel lifts and moving walkways, move jet bridges and hangar gates, and perform sophisticated coordination tasks in baggage handling. A developer, manufacturer, and distributor of drive technology, NORD DRIVESYSTEMS has equipped many airports throughout the world, including those in Hamburg, Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, Ottawa, Johannesburg, and Taipei. The German systems provider creates drive concepts for all routine and special requirements in close cooperation with customers and with an eye on long-term...

In the 2009 financial year, Bachmann electronic earned revenues of 52.3 million Euros. Its target was to maintain the previous year's level of 50.4 million Euros (2008) and not drop below it. This target was exceeded by far - revenue was up 3.8 percent over the previous year. This result was achieved primarily due to the stronger sector focus pushed in the last three years and growth into additional geographic markets. Bachmann recorded a significant surge in Asia, where governments are promoting wind energy. Since September 2009, Bachmann electronic has been represented in China with...
