The first Weihenstephan conference on automation technology used in the manufacture of bakery goods was held in Freising-Weihenstephan near Munich, Germany in mid-April 2013. The aim was to create a communication platform for end users involved in the manufacture of bakery products, mechanical engineers, system integrators, automation manufacturers and representatives from research institutions. The factory automation business unit of Mitsubishi Electric Europe B.V. supported the event organised by the Weihenstephan Institute for Grain Research (WIG) as a gold sponsor.
Around 100 participants involved in baking, the manufacture of bakery products and cereals as food, commercial baking/the baking industry, the manufacture of ingredients, mechanical engineering and mills used the event as the perfect opportunity for engaging in an intensive exchange of ideas. Because the conference proved so popular, with all the available places being taken within a very short space of time, it was decided to make it an annual event.
