CFRP materials (carbon-fibre reinforced plastics) are now an integral part of modern industry, with applications in every conceivable area of manufacturing. Initially they were developed for use in the aerospace industry and in motor racing. Products made from fibre-reinforced plastics exhibit a high degree of stiffness and strength coupled with a low density. They are highly resistant to corrosion and fatigue, have a low coefficient of thermal expansion and exhibit designable properties. In the long term product developers and buyers will have to face the fact that carbon-fibre composites are here to stay. CFRP materials already featured prominently at last year's Industrial Supply, an important part of the Hannover Messe constellation of trade shows. And coverage of these high-performance industrial materials has been further extended this year.
"CFRP materials have formed an important product group at Industrial Supply for a number of years now. Within the subcontracting sector they have long been a major driver of innovation. Industrial subcontractors are constantly seeking to bring highly innovative products to the world market as quickly as possible. Industrial Supply is the perfect showcase for them, because it brings together all the right ingredients: an international audience, formidable expertise and know-how, and the right mix of different industry sectors", says Arno Reich, Project Manager for Industrial Supply at Deutsche Messe AG.
This year the German Federation of Reinforced Plastics (AVK), the industry association which represents manufacturers of fibre-reinforced plastics/composites, will be teaming up with its member firms for the second time to stage a joint presentation at Hannover Messe. "Carbon-fibre composite products are eco-friendly to manufacture and use, and they are energy-efficient, lightweight and sustainable. So in tomorrow's world they are going to be even more important than they already are today", says Dr. Elmar Witten, Managing Director of AVK. "The present debate about the use of CFRPs often leads us to overlook the fact that industry has developed fibre-composite concepts based for example on glass fibres or natural fibres - that are already available, usable and financially viable", adds Witten.
