A report analysing a decade of data for over 1,000 large motors and generators delivered globally by ABB’s Västerås facility in Sweden shows that not aiming for the highest efficiency could be costing global operators up to $12 billion over a 25-year asset life. To mark the release of the report, we spoke with Gunnar Porsby, R&D Manager, High-Speed Synchronous Machines, ABB and David Bjerhag, Global Business Line Manager, High Speed Synchronous Motors, Generators and Condensers within ABB Motion’s High Power division.
Efficient interface with robust plastic housing for decentralised drive systems
An IEN Europe interview with Laurent Liou, Product Marketing Manager, Moxa, specializing in OT network security and compliance with cybersecurity standards.
Improved safety, faster changeovers with a new machine cutting machinen for cardboard cores with up to 1,250 mm diameter
The industrial group receives this coveted innovation prize in recognition of its platform for highly integrated actuators. An independent jury chaired by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer Society, selected the winner from among three nominated companies. The award was presented by Dorothee Bär, Federal Minister for Research, Technology and Space, during the official opening of HANNOVER MESSE on April 19, 2026, in the presence of Federal Chancellor Friedrich Merz.
More and more mobile robots are finding their way into industry. According to the International Federation of Robotics (IFR), a total of 200,000 service robots were sold worldwide in 2024. 51% of this were robots for transport and logistics. Wherever human interaction, variable processes or frequent changes of location are required, humanoid robots are seen as a promising technology. In real life, however, their use often fails due to high investment costs and complex integration.
We spoke to Travis Cox (Chief Technology Evangelist, Inductive Automation). He has been with the company since 2004, connecting industry experts, promoting innovation and open standards, and showcasing the capabilities of the Ignition platform.
The development of AI models in joint projects yields improved results because multiple companies contribute their data. The situation becomes critical, however, if a partner withdraws and requests the return of its data. With federated unlearning, Fraunhofer researchers and Fujitsu Research have developed a method for precisely removing data from decentralized AI models.
Brady Corporation, a worldwide specialist in industrial identification, launches a range of new industrial barcode readers that achieve 99.995% reading accuracy.
For industrial quality control and defect detection
Assembly, installation and unlocking without special tools
An independent jury comprising top-class experts from political and business communities, research, and the media, chaired by Prof. Dr.-Ing. Holger Hanselka, President of the Fraunhofer Society, has nominated three companies selected from the numerous submissions for the HERMES AWARD. The winner will be announced at the official opening ceremony of HANNOVER MESSE on April 19, 2026. The Federal Minister of Research, Technology and Space, Dorothee Bär, will present the award.
Integrated module offers comprehensive safety functions up to SIL 3 level
Hydrogen can be used in many ways as an energy source for industry and heavy goods transport, making it a key factor in transforming the energy supply. In addition to being produced from renewable energies, its availability is also crucial. IO-Link sensors from JUMO enable the rapid implementation and safe operation of a modular concept for hydrogen production. Author: Alexander Hof, Senior Product Manager Connectivity, JUMO
Reliable Overcurrent Protection in Compact Sizes
Offering a wide range of output forces with short lead times for industrial applications
Industrial single- and three-phase supplies with high energy efficiency
Precisely tailored to the requirements of automated industrial processes
Detection of volume, dimensions and position with one picture
Automated packaging, which increases machine speed, helps to address labour shortages in packaging lines.
With design engineers across the globe constantly innovating to meet growing demand for solutions that support an increasingly digitalised environment, expediting product/ solution development times is imperative for business success at both OEMs and system integrators. Increasing numbers are turning to solutions pre-certified for cybersecurity to save time and provide confidence in robust levels of protection against online threats.
Compact Redundancy Model for simple parallel operation
Dynamic drive solutions for machinery and systems
In order to save costs and time, more and more industrial companies are focussing on the possibility of monitoring and controlling devices and systems remotely. Web and cloud-based services are ideal for this: an internet connection makes it possible to control and operate industrial systems as if you were on site and long journeys by service personnel are no longer necessary.
Flexible, modular workpiece transport can bring valuable extra speed to automated assembly with free pallets. Scalability is also enhanced, while built-in tracking provides traceability data to meet the requirements of demanding industries such as automotive.
Easy to handle and operate with Supercap technology
Cables with the highest fire protection class available
Battery- and gearless devices in single- and multiturn-versions
Maximum visibility for use in compact, mobile systems
SPE device for 1 km network range via any 2-wire connection
Enhanced driving safety with AI camera for person detection
Surface plating reduces the amount of precious metal needed for reliable connections
By leveraging a digital twin and the AI-powered, fully automated software solution from Factor4Solutions, Stadtwerke Karlsruhe were able to reduce the annual energy consumption of the existing refrigeration system at the GartenCarée complex by 20 percent within just the first six months of operation – significantly increasing its efficiency. And the full potential is far from reached: for an entire year of operation, the utility expects energy savings of up to 40 percent.
IEN Europe interviewed Norman Hartmann, co-founder and CEO of Workerbase GmbH, who introduces the benefits of the Connected Worker Platform concept.
OPC UA is widely used as a data exchange standard that bridges the gap between OT and IT. A key part of this standard consists of extensible information models and companion specifications. However, many solutions based on OPC UA fail to exploit the potential of these information models and companion specifications. This editorial explains the benefits offered by OPC UA information models and how information models interact with the other components in an IoT solution. Author Dr. Christopher Anhalt is Vice President Product Marketing, Softing Industrial Automation GmbH
Optimization of space requirements and cycle times for dynamic applications
High-performance DAQ system for evaluation and testing in different industrial areas
Leuze SmartID-Edge controls a network of identification systems and sensors for track-and-trace requirements in production and the supply chain. Secure communication between 1D scanners or 2D camera systems takes place at edge level using OPC UA and full integration of the AutoID Companion Specification. The advantage: Each object to be identified is not only represented by its code but also mapped on a virtual tag in the edge system.
Laser triangulation sensors measure variables such as displacement, distance and position on a non-contact, wear-free basis. The most important sensor features are high performance, a compact design and the ability to stabilize the signal with changing surfaces. Micro-Epsilon has now equipped its sensors with the advanced IO-Link interface to network multiple sensors in the factory.
