A report analysing a decade of data for over 1,000 large motors and generators delivered globally by ABB’s Västerås facility in Sweden shows that not aiming for the highest efficiency could be costing global operators up to $12 billion over a 25-year asset life. To mark the release of the report, we spoke with Gunnar Porsby, R&D Manager, High-Speed Synchronous Machines, ABB and David Bjerhag, Global Business Line Manager, High Speed Synchronous Motors, Generators and Condensers within ABB Motion’s High Power division.

We spoke to Travis Cox (Chief Technology Evangelist, Inductive Automation). He has been with the company since 2004, connecting industry experts, promoting innovation and open standards, and showcasing the capabilities of the Ignition platform.
The development of AI models in joint projects yields improved results because multiple companies contribute their data. The situation becomes critical, however, if a partner withdraws and requests the return of its data. With federated unlearning, Fraunhofer researchers and Fujitsu Research have developed a method for precisely removing data from decentralized AI models.
3D printing in companies is booming. Design engineers are printing special components and wear-resistant parts themselves without further ado. However, the projects stand or fall on the quality of the printing material, warns Jonas Burk, Head of Additive Manufacturing at igus. The fact that 3D printing with high-performance polymers from igus is worthwhile is not only proven by the service life tests. Customers can also manufacture their products more economically and faster than injection moulding.

Studying neutrinos is very difficult as they typically pass through most normal matter unimpeded and undetected. Specialist detectors have to be built to hunt for them. The latest one is called JUNO, located 750m below ground in Jiangmen, China. The project is made possible by 17 different countries with 730 scientists working in 74 Universities and national laboratories. To develop the core part of the detector, the liquid scintillator, ultrafast digitizer cards by Spectrum Instrumentation are used.
