ABB has won an order worth around $12 million for high-voltage gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) from Astana Regionalnaya Elektro Setevaya Companiya (AREK), the city's utility provider. ABB will supply 18 bays of 110 kilovolt (kV) and 16 bays of 220 kV GIS that will form an integral part of the Shygys and Dostyk substations, scheduled to be energized in June 2013.

Astana has been experiencing a construction boom as it strives to position itself as the premier city of Kazakhstan and Central Asia. The gas-insulated switchgear will enhance power reliability in the city.

One of the major infrastructure projects being executed to support this ambition is the construction of a 220 kV overhead transmission system with three supporting substations to provide the capital with a safe and reliable power transmission and distribution backbone.
