ABT and the Schaeffler Group have announced a strategic partnership to collaborate for the electrification of light commercial vehicles for Volkswagen. The two companies have already successfully cooperated in Formula E since 2014.

Klaus Rosenfeld, CEO of Schaeffler AG, stated, “The combination of ABT’s entrepreneurial approach and Schaeffler’s understanding of systems and in-depth expertise in the field of powertrain and chassis applications puts us in a perfect position to create something new and to move forward even faster. A proven partnership and a win-win situation for all those involved – innovative, bold and with major business potential.”

Electrical urban mobility solutions

The partnership between the Schaeffler Group and ABT e-Line, a premium partner to Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, will be the opportunity to blend the former’s technology and manufacturing knowledge with the latter’s expertise in implementation and vehicle retrofitting in the field of the electrification of light commercial vehicles weighing up to 3.5 tonnes.

The companies will focus on the electric powertrain, firstly on project management, then on system supplier management. A further objective of the collaboration is to develop flexible mechatronic chassis solutions.

As a result, the solutions developed have great market potential as they can facilitate the widespread implementation of autonomous driving and respond to the increasing demand for clean, efficient and economical mobility in metropolitan areas.
