In consumer electronics, multi-touch technology has not only changed device ergonomics but also user habits. In industrial automation, it has the potential to make machine operation more intuitive, faster and safer; in essence bringing about an ergonomics revolution in machine and system visualization units. Multi-touch technology also promises a significant increase in usability, whereby simplifying system operation while increasing the level of safety. For example, it would eliminate the need to wrestle with complex menu layers by allowing simultaneous touch operations. Handling lists would also be simplified since the operator would simply have to scroll through the content rather having to rely on narrow scrollbars. Additionally, by blocking certain actions until a simultaneous press of a button would result in operational safety. B&R’s multi-touch technology comes in the form of a 21.5” full HD automation panel mounted on a support arm. Its solid glass surface lends itself to easy cleaning and offers the operator excellent haptic properties.
