Blue Danube Robotics has developed a safety solution that transforms  standard industrial robots into cobots and makes safety fences obsolete. AIRSKIN is a tactile sensor-skin which converts standard industrial robots into collaborative assistants by encasing them with a category 3 / performance level e safety system. In addition to the robot, the skin also safely secures end effectors, like grippers, camera systems or mounting parts of the robot. Herein it offers a sensory safety solution for the whole robot that complies with the current cobot safety standard ISO 15066. 

Best of both worlds

With AIRSKIN it is possible to operate standard robot cells without fences for the first time. The customer choses the best robot for his application with regards to payload and reach, he constructs the gripper according to his needs and the safety system will be fitted for the application. AIRSKIN equipped robots combine the advantages of industrial robots and cobots and furthermore outmatch standard collaborative robots in terms of payload, reach, precision and costs. 

Smart and functional 

AIRSKIN consists of multiple soft, airtight pads with smart safety electronics. The integrated sensors measure the pressure change inside each pad and trigger a safety signal as soon as one of the pads is touched. In addition, the soft pads dampen any contact like a cushion. The skin is connected to the safety I/Os, no configuration or software needed. Standard sets are available for common robots and grippers. Its strength lies in a feasible lot size 1 production for custom designed end effectors.
