By leveraging a digital twin and the AI-powered, fully automated software solution from Factor4Solutions, Stadtwerke Karlsruhe were able to reduce the annual energy consumption of the existing refrigeration system at the GartenCarée complex by 20 percent within just the first six months of operation – significantly increasing its efficiency. And the full potential is far from reached: for an entire year of operation, the utility expects energy savings of up to 40 percent.

OPC UA is widely used as a data exchange standard that bridges the gap between OT and IT. A key part of this standard consists of extensible information models and companion specifications. However, many solutions based on OPC UA fail to exploit the potential of these information models and companion specifications. This editorial explains the benefits offered by OPC UA information models and how information models interact with the other components in an IoT solution. Decarbonising industrial activities is key to mitigating climate change – but what happens to the carbon dioxide (CO2) we capture? Permanent sequestration can be difficult and expensive: so what if the captured CO2 could be reused to create a value stream? Whether you choose carbon capture and storage (CCS) or utilisation (CCUS), filtration technology plays a central role in achieving a high-quality end product. Since life began some 1 billion years ago, an intricate web of cycles and relationships has developed. Sunlight is the only input, and nothing is wasted. For the electrical industry, adopting a more circular approach to manufacturing can advance sustainability and offer unique economic opportunities, say Fernando Nuño and Bruno De Wachter, members of the advisory board for electrical manufacturing trade show, CWIEME Berlin.
Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) has been the hero in the fight against friction and wear for years. However, there is also the other side of the coin: as a persistent material, PTFE is currently the focus of the discussion about a possible PFAS ban by the ECHA. Even if there is no ban, the motion plastics pioneer igus has good reasons to look for alternatives. With new formulations, extensive tests and adapted production processes, igus already offers its customers a wide range of PTFE-free products. Author: Dr-Ing. Magnus Orth is Head of Material Development and the Technical Centre at igus.

Combating climate change is a serious challenge, with a nearly overwhelming array of issues to overcome. Sustainability-minded people do their best to lessen their personal carbon footprint by using public transportation, driving an EV, cutting back on energy usage, etc. But the biggest culprit in carbon emissions is actually industry, representing an estimated 23% of all greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S as the U.S. Environmential Protection Agency published.

For low torque and high band width measurements
Studying neutrinos is very difficult as they typically pass through most normal matter unimpeded and undetected. Specialist detectors have to be built to hunt for them. The latest one is called JUNO, located 750m below ground in Jiangmen, China. The project is made possible by 17 different countries with 730 scientists working in 74 Universities and national laboratories. To develop the core part of the detector, the liquid scintillator, ultrafast digitizer cards by Spectrum Instrumentation are used.
Rubber abrasion on airport runways must be removed quickly and thoroughly. Together, tl traffic-lines GmbH and Maschinenbau Cernota GmbH & Co. KG have developed a cleaning process that is much more efficient than previous methods. High-precision rack and pinion gears from LEANTECHNIK play an important role in this process.

Condition monitoring - a wide-ranging area of ever-increasing importance. An increasing number of machines and systems are being equipped with measurement technology to keep a constant eye on their current status and all important operating parameters. To save time and costs during maintenance, condition-based monitoring is increasingly being installed on smaller assets.

The German sensor company and the Swiss measurement and automation technology specialist have agreed on a strategic partnership. Endress+Hauser will take over worldwide sales and service of SICK’s process analyzers and gas flowmeters, with a joint venture to be established for their production and further development.
Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing (WAAM) is an additive manufacturing process that has become increasingly important in the 3D printing of metals in recent years. High build rates, wire as an inexpensive and easily available starting material and a highly controllable process are the main advantages. To optimize 3D printing, the Berlin-based 3D printing specialist GEFERTEC records the temperatures in the workpiece using infrared measurement technology from Optris.
Machines and systems are becoming more and more intelligent – and in many cases more complex as a result. This makes it all the more important that the processes in production are transparent and comprehensible at all times so that the teams in production and maintenance can make the right decisions. This is the only way to exploit the full potential of networked manufacturing environments.
