Hilscher has introduced the new embedded module comX 90, a future-ready communication interface for industrial devices. The module combines powerful multiprotocol communication, integrated security functions and IIoT capability in a compact form factor – while minimizing integration effort. The new comX 90 succeeds the proven comX 51 and is based on Hilscher’s netX 90 communication controller.
Platform strategy for hardware and software
With comX 90, device manufacturers benefit from Hilscher’s decades of expertise in industrial communication. Based on netX technology, the module supports numerous industrial communication protocols for device-level communication using a single hardware platform for all common industrial protocols. Changing the protocol technology only requires a firmware update – Hilscher provides the corresponding protocol stacks. comX 90 is also part of the Hilscher platform strategy: hardware, software, tools, and support all come from a single source – a decisive advantage for customers who value long-term availability, investment protection, and efficient product development.
Measuring 30 × 70 mm, the comX 90 shares the same dimensions as the comX 51, making it easy to use in space-constrained devices. It also fits directly into existing solutions with an SPI host interface – no hardware redesign required, thanks to identical pinning.
CRA-ready and developer-friendly
Designed with the Cyber Resilience Act (CRA) in mind, comX 90 leverages the integrated netX 90 controller and built-in security mechanisms to protect device-level data and communication with minimal implementation effort. Native support for MQTT and OPC UA enables direct IIoT connectivity between field devices, controllers, and cloud systems, while up to 65% lower power consumption versus comX 51 reduces heat generation and can eliminate additional cabinet cooling. An extended operating range down to –20 °C supports use in harsh environments, and Hilscher accelerates evaluation and certification with a dedicated comX evaluation board plus pre-certification and lab services for PROFINET, EtherNet/IP, and EtherCAT—helping shorten development cycles and time-to-market.
