To answer high-precision biological and chemical sensing issues such as vital sign monitoring, Analog Devices launches the AD5940 analog front end, that is an electrochemical & impedance measurement front end. It includes both potentiostat and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) functionality on a single chip for sensor measurement in both time and frequencies domains. It also comprises integrated hardware accelerators for advanced sensor diagnostics. This single chip solution enables to measure 2-Lead, 3-Lead and 4-Lead electrochemical sensors with advantages in terms of system accuracy and size flexibility.

Stores measurement commands in the command memory and measurement results in the data FIFO

With low power consumption and intelligent autonomous control, the front end comprises a combination of leading levels of integration and performance for potentiostat and impedance-based electrochemical sensor managements. Equipped with two potentiostat loops, a low bandwidth loop (with ability to generate AC signals up to 200 Hz) and a high bandwidth loop (generates AC signals up to 200kHz), AD5940 allows to do amperometric, voltametric, or impedance measurements. Moreover, the AD5940 measurement channel features a 16-bit, 800 kSPS, multichannel successive approximation register (SAR) analog-to-digital converter (ADC) with input buffers, a built in anti-alias filter (AAF), and a programmable gain amplifier (PGA).
